Job Summary: The Student Career Advocate (SCA)The Student Career Advocate is a role responsible for providing comprehensive support to high school-aged students who are historically underinvested. This position combines one-on-one counseling, case management, work-site supervision, and special projects to address both the academic and nonacademic needs of students. The role also involves facilitating small groups focused on healing, wellbeing, and skill development, assisting students in developing career plans, and coordinating referrals to appropriate outside services.
The Student Career Advocate works in collaboration with SFUSD Staff, Student Guardians, High School Team, Youth Development Program Manager, and Outside Service Providers to ensure each student's voice is heard and appropriate supports are in place to progress their goals (attending to IEPs, SSTs, and other student support meetings) at Washington High School.
JOB DUTIES: - Provides one-on-one counseling and advising with students on a weekly basis for academic and non academic needs.
- Plans and facilitates weekly workshops
- Visits all student job placement sites and check in with YPA's and site leads
- Creates small peer-to-peer tutoring and mentoring groups focused on graduation requirements and college requirements (skill building, tutoring, applications, letters of recommendation, etc.)
- Builds a positive relationship with youth based on strength based and trauma informed youth development practices.
- Perform outreach activities to ensure program promotion and participation.
- Develop an individual success plan for each youth based on mutually agreed upon goals, timelines, and support.
- Builds relationships with and coordinates with school-day supports such as SST, IEP, SAP Teams, and faculty to ensure communication of goals, strategies, and progress.
- Attends appropriate youth enrichment field trips, workshops and activities.
- Completes administrative tasks such as session notes, timesheets, attendance, and check requests in accordance with organization policies.
- Ensure data is collected and entered into database system; program materials and supplies are adequate for program needs; and youth space is maintained,
- Adapt and/or develop curriculum to facilitate in one-on-ones and group sessions.
- Reach out to community businesses and organizations to inform them about our YPA program.
Qualifications Experience and Characteristics: - Minimum one year of experience working with High School aged youth in a support role through one-on-one and/or group level interventions
- A demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations, particularly centering Black, Latinx, and Indigenous student perspectives; LGBTQQ+ individuals; and those identifying as neurodivergent
- SFUSD alum preferred
- Fluency in English is required. Bilingual skills are highly desired
Necessary Qualities: - Advocacy: Strong advocacy for youth voice and agency. Able to keep student's accountable to their goals and providers accountable to their roles in supporting students.
- Mentorship: Develop students' skills and tools to make informed decisions. Exhibit leadership approach which inspires youth to reach their full potential.
- Willingness to learn cultural competency regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, and other social identities, with an existing ability to communicate and collaborate with people across lines of difference.
- Willingness to learn and use strength-based youth development and trauma-informed care frameworks.

Requirements For All Staff: - DOJ Live Scan Fingerprinting: All employees who have contact with youth under the age of 18 must be fingerprinted under procedures established by the DOJ. We cannot employ any individual who has been convicted of a serious or violent felony, as defined by the California Penal Code. The organization also receives updated information from the DOJ during employment. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records on a case by case basis.
- TB Test: Every employee who has regular contact with youth is required to have a current tuberculin skin test or an X-ray examination of the lungs (with a negative result) prior to reporting for duty.
- Employment Authorization: Employees must be able to prove that they are authorized to work in the United States using any of the documentation allowed according to current I-9 processes.
- Covid-19 Vaccination: SFUSD requires all subcontractors to mandate Covid-19 vaccination: employees must be vaccinated or have a medical or religious exemption to initiate an accommodation and the interactive process.

Essential Physical Tasks: This job requires frequent lifting, pushing and pulling under 10 lbs and occasionally up to 20 lbs. Because of the use of the computer, this job frequently uses the keyboard which requires repetitive motion and dexterity. In the course of the job, frequent walking sometimes over uneven and slippery surfaces, and sitting for periods of time. There is also occasional reaching.
