General Description OPEN UNTIL FILLED Under general supervision, performs responsible work involving the prevention and suppression of fires and delivery of other emergency and non-emergency services. The employee is responsible for responding to emergency situations and assisting in the control and resolution of the situation. The employee works within the scope of established fire department rules, regulations, and procedures, however, is expected to exercise considerable judgment and initiative, when required.
This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply. Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.
Primary Duties These job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other related job duties as well.
- Responds to various uncontrolled and life-threatening emergencies throughout the City and requests for aid outside of the City.
- Operates all fire department equipment and apparatus.
- Operates basic to sophisticated fire, rescue, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Special Operations related equipment.
- Performs all tasks and duties required and/or assigned of a full-service and all-hazards modern fire department.
- Understand, follow, and obey all verbal and written orders, directives, guidelines, and instructions from Fire Department Officers or Incident Commanders.
- Maintains and checks fire equipment for daily operational readiness, requests repairs; assists in minor repairs, and ongoing maintenance of fire department facilities, equipment, and apparatus.
- Attends instructional training and educational sessions in firefighting, rescue, EMS, Special Operations and other disciplines related to fire department duties.
- Prepares and submits routine records and reports using proper verbal and written English and grammar.
- Maintains method of contact (home telephone, personal cellular telephone) for routine and emergency contact.
- Will be required to work rotating shifts (24/48), on-call duties, and extended hours in normal and emergency situations in various environmental conditions and all hours of day/night and perform at maximum ability.
- Other job functions - Participates in custodial, maintenance, and repair duties; answers phones, providing information and assisting the public; performs routine clerical duties such as light typing and filing; performs other duties as assigned or required; may be assigned functional duties outlined in Department Operating Guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: - High School diploma or GED is required.
Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations - Florida Firefighter's Certificate of Compliance.
- Valid Florida Driver License with acceptable driving record.
- Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification (or paramedic certificate; must maintain one or both)
- Valid CPR for Health Care Providers.
- Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) (minimum of 16 hours).
In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.
Essential Physical Functions & Environmental Conditions Physical Demands - Moderately to heavy work for extended periods of duration with limited rest and rehabilitation.
- Walking, standing, lifting 50+ lbs., running, jumping/leaping, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending, carrying/pushing/pulling 50+ lbs.
- Good hand/finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
- Acceptable eyesight, hearing and speech.
- Ability to wear protective clothing and equipment of 60 lbs. or more and work in extremely dangerous situations associated with extreme atmospheric conditions and temperatures during prolonged and arduous working conditions.
- Ability to successfully complete the Clermont Fire Department Physical Ability Test (PAT) annually as a condition of employment
- Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions, including, but not limited to, weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.), hazardous conditions and close/confined spaces for long periods of time
- May be necessary to endure extensive periods of duty under unfavorable and life threatening situations
- Communicates both orally and in writing.
- Meets and maintains the medical, physical, and psychological demands of the position
- Ability to successfully complete the Clermont Fire Department's Physical Ability Test (PAT) initially and annually thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
Work Environment Works inside in an office environment. Works outside in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc., including extremes of each). Encounters hazardous conditions such as flames, chemicals, smoke, heat, gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting, heights, cold, extreme weather conditions, and exposure to contagious diseases, etc.
