Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position This position is necessary to assist the Director with coordination of all aspects of the University Band Program. The primary function of the position will be the responsibility for instructing, supervising, and monitoring student needs for the woodwind students.
The position will also assist the Recruitment Coordinator with student recruitment, the Academic Success Coordinator with student academic success, and through consistent communication. Instill in all band students conduct standards for the band program.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit The University Band Program uses the art of music as a teaching aid and a tool to strengthen participation in all areas of student life. The program is designed to create an understanding of the diversity in music and culture while preserving and enhancing the history and traditions of the Aggie Bands as goodwill ambassadors and cheerleaders for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The Marching Machine is a 220 member, well-designed, aerodynamic, solidly constructed, arsenal of power and sound. The marching band is one of the best of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The machine performs for over 20,000 fans at home and away football games, band competitions, band exhibitions, high school football games, and community and campus events. The students of the machine represent virtually every discipline on campus. The band is an auditioned group. The audition is open to all students of the university who wish to participate. The Marching Machine performs different genres of music and incorporates all styles of marching and maneuvering. The unit is a source of pride for the university and the community. The A&T Symphonic Band consists of approximately 75 musicians who perform a variety of music literature intended to entertain and appeal to diverse audiences. The A&T Concert Band is made up of 75 instruments played by non-music majors who want to continue to play and perform. The University Pep Band performs for home basketball games and during tournament play. The NC A&T State University Music Program has been fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1991. We offer three degree programs for students wishing to pursue a career in music.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Secondary Education with a Music Concentration, which trains public and private classroom teachers for state certification. Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music Performance. Bachelor of Arts (BA) in General Music, a liberal arts music program with concentrations in musical theatre, pre-music therapy, and music electronics. Our low student-teacher ratio ensures individual attention, for each student. Emphasis is placed on career development. Upon graduation students are ready for competitive graduate school programs or to begin work in professional careers.
Minimum Requirements This position requires a Master's degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in Music or a related field and demonstrated musical ability as a conductor of marching, concert, and pep bands. Proven successful experience as a band director/teacher/percussion instruction at the college/university level.
